'Le Murce' in the past:
Le Murce is an old farmhouse built mostly in the
period from 1700-1800. It was probably used as a
summer home for wealthy bourgeois families from
Città di Castello or Sansepolcro.
In the second half of the 1800s it was bought by
the family of the present owners to be used as their
primary residence and center of business. The structures
of importance are stables, grain storage barns,
tobacco dryers, and wine cellars.
The Battocchi’s are an old entrepreneur farming
family from the area. The livelihood and development
of this family was assured by an exploitation of
a vast area of farmland subdivided into farms and
leased to sharecroppers. At the end of the 1950s
with the exodus of share cropping families from
the countryside brought about a sudden decline in
agriculture managed with sharecropper contracts.
This in turn made room for a farm more or less managed
with wage earners. 'Le
Murce' today:
Le Murce today remains very much the same from
the outside. The stables, grain storage barns and
tobacco dryers are no longer in use but have been
meticulously restored and transformed into housing.
The grain storage barn has been painstakingly restored
and is now the apartment for the owner’s daughter
and her husband. In addition there are two single
room apartments for guests.
They are in the final stages of remodeling the tobacco
dryers, the stables, and the hay barn. When the
remodeling is complete the Agriturismo Le Murce
will have in total room for 24 guests. One of these
apartments is completely equipped for disabled guests.
By next season there will be an area for parking
campers including electrical outlets, water, barbecue
and a station to service the unloading of tanks.
