Situated in the Upper
Tiber Valley in the community of San Guistino along
the boarder of Umbria, Tuscany and the Marches the
Agriturismo Le Murce one can easily reach many artistic
and natural places of interest.
San Giustino
- Situated between Città di Castello and
Sansepolcro (Arezzo), the ancient town of Melisciano
is rich in history and art. It’s history is
connected to the Bufalini Family and their amazing
castle (photo above) which has become a museum,
where one can admire the works of Gheradi, Andrea
del Sarto and others from the Flemish school.
Also worth a visit the Villa Magherini Graziani
is a significant example of architecture from the
beginning of the 1600s, which was erected on an
existing medieval fortress. In the town Colle Plino
you can visit the remains of a vast settlement belonging
to the villa “in Tuscis” of Plinio the
Young. Today all that remains of the villa are broad
walls and fragments of mosaics and sculptures. Nearby places to visit:
Città di Castello
– Known since the first century after Christ.
Plinio the Young described it to his friend Apollinare
in the following way “Looking at the town
from the hills above at first glance seems not of
this world but more like a painting created with
incredible mastery.” Today it is known above
all for the Collection of Alberto Burri a master
of informal art, the County Art Museum full of work
from some of the great masters such as Luca Signorelli
and the Dome Museum. The urban configuration of
the city reflects renaissance architecture. The
Noble Vitelli Family erected four large palaces
in each quarter of the city. The last building in
chronological order Vitelli Palace of the Embrasure
is certainly a wonderful example of 15th century
Umbrian Architecture.
Citerna
– At the top of the town is a Fortress,
which was partially destroyed by the Germans in
1944. It is a splendid balcony, which dominates
the Upper Tiber Valley from which you can see
la Verna, il Fumaioli, The mountain of Gubbio
and even Mount Subasio. Worth mentioning is the
Vitelli Palace built in the 1400s and was restored
in 1975. Alessandro Vitelli died in this palace.
In the church of Saint Michele Archangel there
is a crucifixion by Nocolo Pomarancio and a Madonna
in terracotta from the Robbiana school as well
as the bell from 1269. The remarkable church of
Saint Francis from the year 1316 that was rebuilt
in 1508 in the simple renaissance style. Inside
there is a spectacular “Disposition(removing
Christ from the cross)” by Nicolò
Pomarancio as well as “Christ in Glory”
and “Madonna with Child and San Giovannino”
by Raffellino del Colle. There is also a beautiful
wood crucifix from the 1300s, which rests upon
an Umbrian style table. In the nearby house of
the brotherhood there is a magnificent fireplace
from the 1500s. In the neighborhood near the Villa
Ferri in the town of Cappuccini there is the so
called
“Bell of Garibaldi” where the hero
from the two worlds stayed in 1849.
Montone –
A fascinating elliptical shaped medieval that
is dominated by the Franciscan Convent and the
Fortress of Braccio. In the center of the town
is the Fortebracci Square, which at the rise is
the Community Palace. The terraced road has a
spectacular view, which defines the Aries Castle.
The road leads to Saint Francis, a gothic building
with a polygon shaped apse preceding a portico.
Bocca Serriola
– Before you reach the mountain pass, which
is its namesake, you find the Sanctuary of the
Madonna of Belvedere. It dates back to the second
half of the 1600s. The central floor plan is framed
by grand Baroque ornamentation. From the square
there is a breathtaking view of Città di
Castello and the Tiber Valley.
Sansepolcro –
The urban structure is surrounded by a medieval
wall on all 4 sides, which remains to this day.
The predominate architecture is Renaissance and
Baroque. The artistic heritage is truly noteworthy
and is mainly kept in the Civic Museum. The museum
possesses the polyptych “Madonna of Pity”
and the “Resurrection” by Piero della
Francesca, the artist born in this town at the
beginning of the 15th century. Sansepolcro also
was also the home of Luca Pacioli a great mathematician
from the Renaissance who was a student of Piero
della Francesca and a friend of Leonardo da Vinci.
Amongst the buildings of major interest: The Roman
Cathedral, The Lodge of Laudi (16th cent.), The
church of Saint Francis (13th cent.)
